ABOUT SERA

Sera Kalo is a multi-talented musician and songwriter who was born in the United States. She grew up in a Caribbean household that was steeped in a mélange of musical styles, from her Saint Lucian mother’s soulful singing of old hymns and Motown classics, to her Dominican father’s love for reggae, cadence, and calypso. This diverse musical background, combined with her suburban environment that exposed her to 90’s alternative rock and hip-hop, shaped Sera’s love for music from a young age.

At the age of 8, Sera fell in love with classical music, particularly the works of Mozart & Chopin. She was convinced that she would become a classical pianist, but years later she discovered her love for vocals. Sera went on to study classical piano performance, but eventually focused more on her voice. Her vocal inspirations included the likes of Carmen McRae, Eva Cassidy, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Lauryn Hill, India Arie, Amel Larrieux, and Erykah Badu.

In New York, Sera would learn about jazz legends such as Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. The Kitchen, 55 bar, Smalls, the Village Vanguard, the Jazz Standard, and the Stone became her regular hang out spots, where she would immerse herself in the sounds of improvisation and free jazz.

Sera Kalo has appeared on over 23 albums produced in Germany and Asia. She has made a lasting impression on the Berlin music scene with her future jazz-soul project, Seraleez. Since Sera Kalo’s work has become even more noteworthy, gathering nominations for the 2020 Listen to Berlin Publikumpreis, 2023 Listen to Berlin Most Creative Music Video Award, and most recently the 2023 German Record Critics Award for her debut album, eXante (released in June 2023).  Limitless, Sera’s influences travel through the genres of soul, pop, jazz, classical, electronic and Caribbean music. Sera Kalo has found her voice as a singer and as songwriter using intimate musical soundscapes and poetic storytelling to characterize her sound. Sera’s career she explores the limitless approach of what she calls, “genre-fluid” music.
